RAKU

Raku is a 400 year old clay firing tradition originating with the Japanese Tea Ceremonies. The very essence of drama and simplicity emerge in the firing event. The vessel is placed in a preheated kiln then the heat is further increased to white hot temperatures until finally the glowing pot is removed at the precise moment of completion, which is determined by the potter's skillful eye.

With the glaze still molten, the pot is smothered in various organic materials which have different and dramatic effects on the final glaze. Dunking the piece in water or sprinkling it produces the crackle patterns or the brilliant metallic lusters that capture the magical beauty of the rainbow. Raku needs to be kept out of direct sunlight to protect the beauty of the pot. Raku is not food safe.
